Memphis neighborhoods: Cordova, Germantown and Cooper-Young

December 22, 2011

Known by many for its historical role in the music history of the United States, Memphis has evolved into a city with diverse neighborhoods but remains a center of culture in the region. When buying a home in the city, current and prospective residents should give some thought to the lifestyle they wish to enjoy and the neighborhood that will best foster that life comfortably.

Cordova

Located on the eastern edge of the city, Cordova is a suburban area that was once a quiet farming village. More recently, it became one of the cities fastest-growing communities, allowing residents to enjoy a comfortable lifestyle while remaining close enough to the city center that access is easy and rapid. As a suburban-style neighborhood, it has many single-family houses suitable for families.

The community is home to some businesses as well, and sits close to one of the city's larger parks. The park, Shelby Farms, is the site of many recreational activities. Residents can conveniently engage in not only biking and running, but also horseback riding and fishing. The community holds annual events including an arts and crafts fair and a music festival.

Germantown

East Memphis is just north of Cordova, and one of the city's busier commercial neighborhoods. It is home to many offices and retail or service businesses, with neighborhoods that mix old and new construction and combine apartments with homes.  Germantown is farther from the city center than Cordova, but remains connected.

According to the Memphis Chamber of Commerce, the neighborhood has many parks and a number of award-winning schools. It also is home to a significant medical community and contains upscale shopping opportunities for area residents to take advantage of. Living here means a bit more distance from the center of city life and activity in Memphis, but may be an appealing lifestyle for many.

Cooper-Young

Found in Midtown Memphis, Cooper-Young is home to many of the city's shopping venues and restaurants, and has a thriving culture. Midtown is host to many of the city's trendy areas, and Cooper-Young is among them. This is the place for residents who wish to be in the thick of the city and experience the lively, vibrant neighborhood.

Residents who enjoy spending time enjoying the attractions of the city will likely feel at home here, where entertainment is close at hand. Housing is diverse, with a mix of large older homes and smaller, more modern ones found on the same streets.
